Dennis Dart single decker service bus camper conversion. Based on a rare 1993 Dennis Dart with one-piece windscreen, I have used this for a number of years for motorcycle race transport, and it is converted with that in mind, so may need further conversion for family and leisure use. He is fitted with towbar and 7pin electrics.
"Hopper" started his working life in Bromley, carrying countless passengers before being sold to Stagecoach and moved down to Devon. Latterly he spent some time as a limo/party bus before falling into my hands some ten years ago, when I modified the interior layout to suit my purposes of camping at race circuits with a place to sleep, get changed, cook and entertain fellow racers.
The front part is the kitchen area with generous worktop space, a circular stainless steel sink and a 5 ring (including large wok burner) gas hob. Drawer space beneath needs finishing as was in the middle of converting from cupboards. 12v LED spot lights illuminate the kitchen and the central area, which has a bench sofa on one side, a fold down table on the other and two small cupboards, one of which houses the fuel tank for diesel heater.
Underneath the bench seat live the electrics, with the bus main batteries, two 110Ah leisure batteries, which are charged by electrical hookup and a portable solar panel. There is a consumer unit fitted, which can be switched between external electrical hookup and a 1.5KW inverter running off the leisure batteries.
The back end of the bus is given over to the bedroom space with a fixed double bed, under bed storage, a retro pine chest of drawers and a clothes rail. There are two 27inch LED monitors with separate HDMI feeds so two people can watch sources from two computers, or one computer can share the monitors.
A towbar is fitted along with 7 pin socket, that I have used to tow a trailer with the race bikes on, and that was fine. I am sure that if necessary, a much bigger trailer could be towed with no problem. The GVW is 6.18 tonnes amd the conversion has been registered with DVLA so it requires a standard MOT test.
The engine is an unburstable Cummins 5 litre B series, connected to an Allison automatic transmission, which between them have covered some 535,000 Km. The mileage has started again as there is now a GPS speedo fitted in place of the old tachograph.
The bus hasn't been used for a couple of years owing to various injuries (and bloody Covid lockdowns...) keeping me away from racing. I have just made a very big mistake and renewed my driving licence at age 70 online, which has cancelled my class C1 entitlement, so I can no longer drive it. The MOT expired a couple of years back, but last time it passed with just a couple of advisories on the kingpins. It starts and drives nicely but isn't charging the main batteries at the moment. I have replaced the alternator, but that didn't do the trick, so my guess is that the farmyard rats have dined out on the cabling, so access to the underside will be required to locate and repair the damage.
Basically I have to downsize owing to the cock-up with my licence, so need to sell my old friend Hopper (named after Dennis Hopper from Easy Rider) in order to replace him with a caravan that I am still licenced to tow. If you have any questions please feel free to ask, or if you would like to view in person, you will be more than welcome. I am based just outside Chepstow in south Wales.
The MOT expired 2 years ago and the bus has not been used since. It runs nicely and drives but does not charge. Since fitting a new alternator didn't cure the problem, I suspect rat damage to the wiring underneath. For these two reasons, collection will be of necessity on a low loader or similar. The bus is located in Chepstow, about 5 miles from the old Severn bridge in south Wales. If you think this is going to be difficult to collect under those circumstances, please refrain from bidding or making offers. Thank you.
